- Working principle: Cold fluid (e.g., cooling water) and hot fluid (e.g., refrigerant vapor) enter the condenser at the same end and flow in the same direction while exchanging heat.
- Outlet temperature limit: The outlet temperature of the cold fluid cannot theoretically exceed the outlet temperature of the hot fluid, which limits its maximum heat transfer efficiency.
- High initial heat transfer: The heat transfer rate at the inlet is very high due to the maximum temperature difference.
- Relatively Simple Construction: The tube arrangement in some tube-and-shell designs can be more straightforward. Advantages: Ideal for applications where outlet temperature requirements are not critical, or where high thermal stress due to large initial temperature differences is an issue.
- Typical applications: Some shell and tube heat exchangers, specific waste heat recovery devices.
- Working principle: Hot and cold fluids enter the condenser from opposite ends and flow in opposite directions while exchanging heat.
- Efficient heat transfer: Maintaining a relatively uniform and large average temperature difference across the entire heat transfer surface, resulting in higher efficiency than parallel flow.
- Superior temperature achievement: The outlet temperature of the cold fluid can be close to the inlet temperature of the hot fluid, allowing for deeper cooling and higher heat energy recovery.
- Energy and cost savings: Higher efficiency means less heat transfer area required for the same duty, or lower coolant flow, resulting in lower long-term operating costs.
- Advantages: High efficiency, energy saving, able to achieve lower condensation temperature or higher heating temperature. It is the first choice for most industrial applications.
